Josie claims the JW19 National Omnium title in Melbourne
From the Cycling NSW website: -
Josie Talbot (NSW) claimed her first national omnium crown following a consistent performance which saw her finish in the top three in all six events.
Talbot, 16, posted a convincing victory in the points race for her lone win, however it was four second place finishes in the flying lap, individual pursuit, scratch and 500m time trial which secured her win. Talbot also finished third in the elimination race.... (click here for the full article).
On behalf of all MCCC members, we say congratulations and well done to Josie.
Anyone who wants to see Josie in action on the track should venture to the Youth Olympics track cycling events being held at Dunc Grey Velodrome between 17th-20th January. I'm certain Josie would be rapt to see a big contingent of MCCC guys there to cheer her on to Olympic glory.

Josie's success at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival
Josie Talbot's form was running to schedule atthe recent Australian Youth Olympic Festival held in Sydney last week. With the cycling events being held at the Dunc Grey Velodrome, Josie was on home soil and used that advantage to take gold medals in all three events she entered.
Below are excerps of news articles written throughout the festival about Josie's performances on the track.
CYCLING: Australia’s Josie Talbot is shaping up to be the next big thing in cycling. She’s the favourite to win the women’s omnium on Sunday at the Dunc Gray Velodrome, making the win her third gold medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF).
The 16-year-old from Camden, NSW, has already won gold in the women’s team pursuit and the women’s 5km scratch race on Thursday and Friday.
Talbot’s results are a dream come true for the young star.
“It’s a very big confidence booster,” Talbot said. “I was a bit surprised [to win gold] in the scratch race because it is a very strong field out there and I hadn’t ridden with the girls in a couple of weeks so yeah I was very happy with that.”
Leading into the second day of the women’s omnium and the final day of the cycling competition at the AYOF, Talbot is leading with five points, her closest competition on 10.
The first event Sunday, the 2000 metre individual pursuit (IP), is not Talbot’s strongest event but she is confident her lead and success in the scratch race on Friday will stand her in good stead to win that round and maintain her overall lead of the omnium.
“Having the lead already makes me feel more confident,” she said.
“There are a few strong IP riders in the bunch so I am not expecting to win that but after winning the scratch race a few days ago I am pretty confident in that event and we will just see how it goes in the 500.”
Leading up to the AYOF Talbot has not tapered off and is treating the meet as a training experience for nationals on 30 January in Sydney.
“Nationals are my goal so I have been using this as a tester and a training to see how I will go,” Talbot said.
Despite nationals the young cyclist has her eyes and goals set on bigger things including Rio 2016.
“This year I want to make junior worlds for the track, but I guess I will just keep training and see how I go,” she said.
“I would love to make the Rio Olympics but we will just see how everything goes.”

CYCLING: Australia’s Josie Talbot has held out to win the women’s omnium after holding first place in all six rounds of the two-day event at the Dunc Gray Velodrome.
In other events New Zealand took home gold for the men’s sprint, and Australia secured first place in both the men’s 7.5km scratch race and the women’s team sprint.
Talbot needed to win the final round of the women’s omnium, the 500 metre time trial, to assure her third AYOF gold medal.
The 16-year-old rode the fastest 500m trial in 37.290 seconds to hold her first place position with 14 points to take home the gold.
Australian Kelsey Robson beat her countryman Elissa Wundersitz for silver on a count-back after both riders finished on 18 points.
Talbot was happy with the win despite her performance in the scratch race.
“I was a bit disappointed with that ride (scratch race) and yeah it worried me a little bit but I knew I just had to give it my all in the 500 and it turned out for the best,” she said.
“It feels really good. I am really happy with my results especially in a class field like today.”
Under 19 Individual Pursuit (IP) world champion Robson broke an AYOF record in the fourth round of the omnium, the 2km IP.
Robson’s time of 2 minutes 26.594 seconds lowered fellow Australian Michaela Anderson’s AYOF record set in 2009.
The first medal event of the day, the men’s 7.5km scratch race, was plagued by falls in the final three laps.
In two separate falls, eight riders from Australia, Combined Oceania, Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand crashed from the race. Luckily nobody was seriously hurt.
Callum Scotson of Australia Gold took out the race with a lengthy lead in front of silver and bronze medallists Callum Saunders (NZL) and Bradley Heffernan (AUS Green).
Scotson with two gold medals and a silver said he wasn’t expecting do so well.
“It feels great,” the South Australian said. “I wasn’t expecting that coming in. I was hoping maybe to do well in the team pursuit but my form has just come up a lot and yeah I went well.”
Despite the scratch race not being his event, the 16-year-old did not let the falls faze him.
“It’s not usually my event, I just took a chance and it worked out for me,” he said. “I heard them but you just have to keep going, not let it faze you.”
Australia Gold pair Tian Beckett and Courtney Field set an Australian and All Comers record of 35.364 seconds, in winning gold in the women’s team sprint.
They lowered the Australian record by 0.064 of a second set in 2012 where they defeated Queenslanders Kiara Dundas and Tennille Falappi.
In the qualifying rounds Beckett and Field broke the AYOF record set Chinese Taipei in 2007.
Malaysia’s team of Nurul Alissa Mohamad Azman and Farina Shawati Mohd Adnan won bronze.
Beckett and Field had never raced together and were overjoyed with their win.
“We hadn’t actually practiced together at all so we just kind of went with the flow and just tried our best and wow it’s just so amazing,” Field said.
“It feels amazing, I mean representing your country is an extra boost to be at your best at these wonderful competitions,” Beckett said.
Jeremy Presbury (NZL) beat Australia Gold rider Jai Angsuthasawit 2-0 for the gold of the men’s sprint.
Patrick Constable (Australia Gold) beat teammate Alex Radzikiewicz 2-1 for bronze.
Presbury said it was “an awesome feeling” to win his second gold medal at the AYOF after his success in the keirin on Friday.
“It’s always a special feeling to take away a gold in any race but to do it in an event like this it’s you know absolutely incredible,” he said.
“I came to this event fairly confident about my keirin riding form but I haven’t previously had any results in a sprint event so to come away with a gold is amazing.”
